Why Pharmacy Careers Offer Exciting Prospects
Pharmacy careers are a realistic attainment for anyone who is prepared to spend the time and money going through the educational process needed to qualify. This is obviously not a career which can just take anyone, as a degree of highly specialized knowledge is needed to carry out many of the tasks you would associate with a practicing pharmacist. It is a career, though, where anyone who is able to complete their studies can look forward to unbroken years of service with no unemployment and exceptional prospects.
The pharmacist career is one which has the odds stacked in your favor right from the start. There is a tough educational requirement which cannot be overcome or eliminated, because it is prescribed by the authorities and not by individual employers. This keeps anyone who is not entirely serious out of the profession and eliminates a large percentage of the competition before you even start. Every student knows, however, that there are always plenty of graduates looking for work. What makes pharmacy such a highly promising career is the expansion in the health care industry due to the aging population and the prevalence of so many health problems in our society.
There are two distinct aspects of pharmacy which can almost be considered to be separate careers, although the knowledge and the educational requirement is the same for both. The majority of pharmacists work in a retail setting where most of the work is routine. The pharmacist will be taking prescriptions from patients and dispensing the medicines. There is always an advisory aspect to pharmacy which is vitally important, and this is the reason why the qualifications are always needed. Larger pharmacies can even delegate much of the dispensing tasks to technicians while they concentrate on serving patients in an advisory capacity.
Other pharmacy careers operate within hospitals, and these need a different set of skills in addition to he knowledge of drugs and their uses. You will need to be able to think and act quickly as there will be times when you will be faced with emergency situations. While the doctors have to handle most of the real cutting edge situations, there can still be times when drugs need to be dispensed quickly and the patient monitored for possible reactions. Powerful drugs can be needed in emergency situations, and these can trigger extreme side effects. A pharmacist needs to know when a drug needs to be discontinued, and when further drug treatments to combat side effects may be needed.
Breaking in to a pharmacist career is not easy, and there are no shortcuts. There is, however, one possible route into the profession which can ease your way slightly. The job of pharmacy technician requires a high school education but nothing more. As such, there will be many more people applying for these jobs, but you will still stand out if you can demonstrate clearly that you intend to complete a four year training program and to make it to the job title of pharmacist. You can then be earning money from the profession while you study online or through correspondence.
Many pharmacy careers are achieved by those who start to become interested in medicine later in life, as the route into the job has been simplified. While the qualifications still need to be achieved, the growth of online learning opportunities has meant that many people who would otherwise have found it too difficult to cope with the residential requirements and the need to leave their existing employment are now able to qualify while they keep their existing career. As long as you are the right type of person for online learning, there should now be no insurmountable barriers to pharmacy careers.
